MauiTime Best of Maui 2017

It's not possible to write a review good enough for this band! They played for our wedding last week and blew everyone away. The sound was on point, the songs were a perfect mixture of blues, jazz, soul, and zydeco, and everyone young and old had a great time dancing the whole night. Soul Kitchen went above and beyond to make our wedding night so special, we felt like we had a one in a million performance!! If you want to skip the DJ for your event, and you want the best Maui has to offer you MUST book Soul Kitchen.”

Truly I am the luckiest woman in the world! Well, next to some of you, that is.... I was surrounded by 88 (!) of the best friends anyone could have anywhere. Tempa Singer Nave, the woman with the vocals from Heaven and the attitude of sass and glee is the main vocalist of Soul Kitchen Maui. The rest of the band includes her handsome hubby, wonderful singer and guitar player Naor Nave; talented singer and keyboardist Michael Elam, who was the first member of the band I had the great fortune to meet; Bruce Boege, the saxophonist with the mostest-phonist; Jimmy Coulter, who didn't have room for his full drum set, and yet, made exiting rhythms on everything else he could drum on; Sue S Westcott, beautiful violinist with class and style; and Andrea Walls, who is the bravest and most positive role model of what someone can do after experiencing a tragic injury. She lost the tips of her first three fingers of her left hand in a boating accident a couple of months ago, and has learned how to pay the violin brilliantly using just her thumb and pinky. What a girl. Another reason I know I'm lucky is that not only did I get to host the Best Band on Maui, but I had the great honor of having Marcus Johnson join in, because their regular bass player was unavailable. How awesome is that?!?! Marcus is definitely one of best bass players on Maui. I've been a fan of his for many, many years. We've been Facebook friends for a while, but that was the first time I got to meet him in person. How can I begin to thank Soul Kitchen for making the party a huge success?! I can't imagine having a big shindig again without them!

My wife and I have seen the band a few times and I'm amazed at their tight, seemingly effortless performances. They don't need a 'wall of sound' or blow you away volume level; the music is tasty and smooth. Tempa's vocal so are exceptional but the whole band is great. I believe "Brooklyn" and "Dr. Wu", two Steely Dan classics, would be notable additions to Soul Kitchens repertoire. Catching SK at Mulligans on Fridays is an evening well spent.

We first met the talented Tempa, Naor and Mike at Fleetwood's during one of their regular gigs, and were completely blown away by their effortlessly cool renditions of some Nina Simone and Jackson Five songs. At the time, my then fiancé and I were planning our upcoming destination wedding on Maui and couldn't think of a better group who could perform the expansive range of songs we had our hearts set on. We asked Soul Kitchen if they would consider performing on our big day and they graciously accepted! Soul Kitchen is always cooking up new ways to play some of the greatest songs of all time. They even performed an original song we specially requested for our walk down the aisle, making for a beautiful and personalized moment we'll never forget. Our guests continue to rave about Soul Kitchen and we always try to catch their performances on Maui when we're visiting. A truly first-rate band that deserves every accolade. We are among their biggest fans and would recommend them to anyone in a heartbeat.

Pleasantly surprised while at 1st Friday in Wailuku, planned on a quick visit to First Friday and then out to find something interesting for the evening... heard the the first notes in the distance from Soul Kitchen Maui from down the street... Ended up staying for the whole show, or soulful experience is more appropriate... Go out of your way if you have to, make sure to find where they are performing. Unique tones, rifts and vocals that I have not heard in years. Their interpretation of music as an experience truly a gift to the world..

Serendipity - an unexpected experience. That's what it was for my husband Dave and I when we saw Soul Kitchen for the very first time on July 5th at Mulligans on the Blue. We were fortunate enough to be seated right up in front and at times I felt drawn into the performance itself. It was that intimate. I don't know what I was expecting when friends invited us to go, but an evening of outstanding and unique music is what I received! All of the members of the band are individually talented and when they come together - magic happens. Plus, they seem to be greatly enjoying each other. The varied and eclectic numbers were at times soulful (pardon the pun), jazzy, rock and roll - ish, folksy and tender. I loved the Israeli music and wanted to hear more of that along with the band's original songs. The way that Naor and Tempa (who happen to be husband and wife) sang -while glancing at each other - gave me chills. They are the real deal. The violinist wasn't there the night we were, but I look forward to hearing her join the group on a return visit next year. I feel like we witnessed a group of multi-talented artists that is just on the cusp of being discovered and I wish them all the best. I'll be right there, following them every step of the way. I think a mainland tour would be awesome. Truly.

Two years ago, I had the pleasure of hearing Soul Kitchen perform at their first-ever public performance: they had graciously donated their time and talent in support of a fundraiser for Leilani Farm Sanctuary of Maui, at Flatbread in Paia. About 6 months later, I introduced this wildly eclectic group at their first night at Mulligan's in Wailea. Since then, I have watched them grow and evolve, now into a six-member group that includes violin and sax, along with the original guitar, keyboards, and percussion--and, of course, the incomparable Tempa, the heart and soul of the group, on vocals. Last night, my life-partner and I ventured to Lahaina for our first experience at Fleetwood's. Soul Kitchen was definitely "on"; and it was all raised to another level or two (or twenty!) by the onstage presence of Mick Fleetwood himself on percussion. The chemistry among all the musicians, and with the audience, was absolutely amazing, as Soul Kitchen meandered through their wide-ranging repertoire of jazz, rock, pop, blues, zydeco, and more. Tempa included some numbers from her Women and Jazz program. I especially loved her "channeling" of jazz great Bessie Smith. The whole evening was 10+! Soul Kitchen is a great group, fun and engaging. Hard to imagine a better pau hana experience anywhere! -Dr B of Mana'o Hana Hou Radio.

One of the highlights of our annual trip to Maui is Soul Kitchen...we love this very talented band and are definitely groupies. It has been very exciting to watch Soul Kitchen evolve and welcome new players. We especially enjoyed Women in Jazz and would love to have that special program as a CD We look forward to returning to Maui and Soul Kitchen. Videos to all--you are great!

Soul Kitchen is a very talented group of professional singers and musicians. We have seen several of their shows at Mulligans on the Blue in Wailea and Fleetwoods in Lahaina and completely enjoyed them all. Mick Fleetwood himself has occasionally sat in and jammed with the band. Lead singer Tempa’s voice is at the center of the band’s unique sound but the vocals and harmonies by guitarist extraordinaire Naor Nave and outstanding keyboardist Michael Elam are such fine performances in their own right. Whether they are performing one of their original compositions or covering a classic soul tune like “Chain of Fools” in their own creative style, their passion for excellence in their music comes through loud and clear. Several guest artists perform regularly with the band, and make for a very entertaining show. The percussion (and wash board!) beat of Jimmy C, saxophone melodies of Bruce Boege, and violin leads of Andrea Walls add a lot to the mix. Do yourself a favor when you’re on Maui and treat yourself to an evening of Soul Kitchen.

I just LOVE Soul Kitchen! My dance Partner and I go to Mulligans frequently to enJOY dancing to their unique creative music. I've sung for/with people my whole long life and I am consistently tremendously Awed by Tempa's versatile rich voice. She gives her All; All of the time, and it is More than anyone else I have ever witnessed for that blues/jazz Soul style! Her Husband is a brilliant guitarist; and the rest of the talented band is So tight together. They all-ways seem to be having Good time which transfers to all of us in the audience. I highly recommend that you treat yourself to an evening with them!
